Stuart Emslie has completed a dissertation for the London University degree of Master of Science by Research in Corporate Governance and Ethics. The dissertation explores the relationship between the board of directors (the board) and a range of organisational performance indicators for a sample of 21 NHS foundation trusts. Strong and statistically significant correlations were found between board performance, financial performance, and a number of staff satisfaction indicators drawn from the national staff survey. This study is the first to provide empirical evidence of a link between board and organisational performance in the NHS.
